Curriculum
The Lower School program at North Jakarta Intercultural School (NJIS) begins at grade one and continues through grade five. NJIS has the luxury of small class sizes, averaging 15 students per class. Our Lower School faculty comes to us from the United States, Canada, Australia, and Indonesia. The School aligns the curriculum with the standards from the American Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in math and language arts, AERO standards in science and social studies, NCCAS for the arts, ISTE for computers, and SHAPE for physical education and health.
In the Lower School students take the core subjects of reading, writing, social studies, math, and science; enrichment courses in physical education and swimming, art, library, STEM and both instrumental and choral music. All students study Bahasa Indonesia, and our Indonesian students have additional courses in Indonesian Studies and Civics, and religion. For our students who come from homes where English is not their first language our English Language Learner (ELL) teacher works closely with the homeroom teachers and the students in an intensive full immersion program. Our newest Lower School program is STEM, where science, technology, engineering, and math are integrated into an exploratory, problem-solving study. STEM learning takes place in all classrooms and also in our focused STEM rooms where students can engage in innovation and connect their academic and their personal curiosities.
Lower School students have plenty of academically stimulating activities and lessons each day. We also have plenty of time for socialization during break times. Celebrations are part of our Lower School experience, as well, with special events planned for House Games, Fall and Spring Arts Performances, Halloween, 100 Days of School, Lunar New Year, and a spectacular all-school musical. Students can choose to participate in extracurricular activities that range from an environmental club to dance.
