Curriculum
The Middle School program at North Jakarta Intercultural School (NJIS) helps our students transition from their homerooms in the Lower School to a more independent and challenging classroom environment in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. Middle School students have more responsibility in music and drama productions and can participate on sports teams. They are guided by grade-level advisors who assist and support each student in their choices and by a team of faculty who know and understand this age group.
In the Middle School students take the core subjects of reading, writing, social studies, math and science and also enrichment courses in physical education and swimming, art, film studies, STEM and choral music. All students study Bahasa Indonesia, and our Indonesian students have additional courses in Indonesian studies and civics, and religion. The 6th grade is the first year where the students from Indonesia take part in the National Exam. For our students who come from homes where English is not their first language, our English Language Learner (ELL) teacher works closely with the faculty and students in a full immersion program.
Our newest Middle School program is STEM, where science, technology, engineering, and math are integrated into an exploratory, problem-solving study. STEM learning takes place in all classrooms and also in our focused STEM rooms where students can engage in innovation and connect their academic and their personal curiosities. By the time our students reach Middle School they can complete more challenging and complex projects and are expected to learn through trial and error rather than from a ready-made kit where the outcome is more predictable.
